Fast Frederick Facts

Camp DavidCamp David, the Presidential Retreat, is located in the Catoctin Mountains of Frederick County, near Thurmont. Camp David became the official Presidential Retreat in 1942, when President Franklin Roosevelt approved the site which he named Shangri-La. Among the important historical events that have occurred here were the 1979 meetings that resulted in the Camp David Accords.

Walking Tours of Downtown Historic Frederick

Exhibition: In & Out of Frederick County: 300 Years of Travel and Tourism
Monday-Saturday, 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. & Sunday, 1:00-4:00 p.m.
Museum of Frederick County History
Travel diaries, maps, postcards, photographs, and clothing worn for travel are some of the artifacts and objects that will accompany the words of people who visited the county and those countians who ventured abroad. The exhibition runs from July 1 through summer 2010. $3 museum admission, members and children free.

Exhibition: "Only Two Sides to the Question:" The Bitter Diagreements of Lincoln and Chief Justice Taney
Saturdays, 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. & Sundays, 1:00-4:00 p.m. (April-Dec.)
Roger B. Taney House
This new temporary exhibit explores the tumultous relationship between the sixteenth president and the Chief Justice. Abraham Lincoln's condemnation of the Supreme Court's Dred Scott decision during his campaign debates with Stephen Douglas helped to set the tone for a problematic post-election realtionship with Chief Justice Taney. Taney challenged Lincoln's authority in Ex Parte Merryman, and the president ignored Taney's demands and focused his attentions of the war. The exhibit runs from April 4 through mid-December 2009. $3 museum admission, members and children free.

First Wednesday Genealogy

Frederick County Archives & Research Center

Join veteran genealogist Bob Fout for this ongoing monthly discussion group. Program attendees will informally discuss research issues and share insights. Registration is not required. For more information, contact the Research Center at 301-663-1188 or library@hsfcinfo.org. $3 Research Center admission, members are free.

Lecture: Journey to Juneteenth: Slavery, the Civil War, and Emancipation in Mid-Maryland
Tuesday, June 9, 7:00 p.m.
C. Burr Artz Public Library, Frederick
Dr. Dean Herrin of the Catoctin Center for Regional Studies will explore the history of slavery and the road to emancipation in mid-Maryland. Free and open to the public.

Mother-Daughter Tea

HSFC Heritage Garden

Time Travelers History Camp
Monday, June 22-Friday, June 26, 9:00 a.m.-12:00 noon
Museum of Frederick County History

Children ages 8 to 11 will explore a different historical theme each day, including life on the frontier, the American Revolution, life as a Maryland slave, the Civil War, and World War II on the home front. Campers will create historical crafts, learn songs, play games, welcome special visitors, view demonstrations, and have other hands-on experiences. Roger Brooke Taney House Recognition Luncheon
Tuesday, June 23, 12:00 noon-2:00 p.m.
Dutch's Daughter Restaurant, Frederick

Members and the public are invited to the biennial Taney House Recognition Luncheon which supports the operation and educational program of the historic site. This year's keynote speaker is former U.S. Attorney General Benjamin Civiletti, who will discuss Taney's own tenure as U.S. Attorney General. We also will be recognizing the support of local attorney W. Jerome "Jerry" Offutt, who has been practing law in the county for nearly 70 years. Reservations are required. Children's Day
Saturday, June 27, 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.

Visitors will learn about life during the 19th century through guided tours, and will meet a Civil War soldier and find out what life was like for him, what items he carried, and what foods he ate. Crafts and historic games will connect families to the lighter side of children's lives in the 1800s. Regular $3 museum admission, members are free.

Join us the celebrate 300 years of travel in and out of Frederick County with the unveiling of the museum's new exhibit. Travel diaries, maps, postcards, photographs, and clothing worn for travel are some of the artifacts and objects that will accompany the words of people who visited the county and those countians who ventured abroad. Light refreshments will be served. Free and open to the public. Exhibit open during regular museums hours beginning Wednesday, July 1 with regular $3 museum admission.

The 19th Century American Photographer
Saturday, July 25, 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.
Roger B. Taney House

Visitors will explore the changes and developments of photography in the 1800s, including what the experience was like for those having their photo taken, the methods and equipment used, and the development process. Collodion artist Todd Harrington will be demonstrating and discussing the art of wet-plate photography. Regular $3 admission, members are free.

Fabulous Fifties Jazz in the Garden
Saturday, July 25, 7:00-9:30 p.m.
HSFC Heritage Garden

Join us to turn back the clock to the fabulous 1950s! The annual event will feature delicious hors d'oevres and desserts, a cash bar, and the live Jazz sounds of the Star Spangled Big Band. Antique cars from the period also will be on dispaly. Attendees are invited to get into the spirit by donning fashions of the '50s, but costumes are not required. Tickets go on sale at the Museum of Frederick County History on June 22. Sponsorship opportunities also are available by contacting Duane Doxzen at 301-663-1188. Old Time Ice Cream Social
Thursday, August 20, 6:00-8:00 p.m.
HSFC Heritage Garden

Everyone is invited to join us for old time sweet treats like Dusty Road Sundaes, root beer floats, and more at this annual "thank you" to the community. The event also features music and crafts and games for young children. Admission, ice cream and other treats, and all activities are absolutely FREE!
