The Historical Society will celebrate the decade of the Ducktale, the poodle skirt, and the DE Soto at the annual Jazz in the Garden fundraiser. Volunteer Recognition Event

Fountain Rock Nature Center, Walkersville
Historical Society volunteers are invited to gather with us to celebrate their contributions. A park naturalist will provide tours of the nature center and the historic battery of limestone kilns. We will enjoy a fried chicken picnic at the park’s new pavilion, and special recognitions and awards will be given out. Volunteers will receive more information by mail.

Don Esterday, founder of Ostertag Vistas and the Myersville Trolley Festival, will discuss the important role trolleys have played in the county’s economic and social development. His presentation will examine trolleys from the founding of the Frederick & Middletown Valley Passenger Railway Company in 1894 to the last run of the Hagerstown & Frederick Railways’ Thurmont route in 1954, as well as their legacy. Free and open to the public.

Join us for a day of sights and sounds from the hearth. Visitors of all ages will experience the early 19th century methods of food preparation and preservation, such as drying, smoking, and salting. Tours will conclude with a glimpse into open hearth cooking and how a typical harvest meal was prepared. Light “modern day” refreshments will be served.
